Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, has urged the members of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission to be transparent in their dealings with all political parties.
Ambode said this on Wednesday while inaugurating in the LASIEC Chairman, Justice Ayotunde Philips (retd.), and other members of the commission at the Lagos House, Ikeja.
Ambode, who noted that the LASIEC members were carefully selected based on their track records of integrity and service, advised the commission to live above board and be fair to all parties while discharging their duties.
He said government placed a high premium on the rule of law, just as he vowed that the executive arm of government would not interfere in the affairs of the commission.
According to him, LASIEC, as the statutory body saddled with the responsibility of conducting local government elections, has a critical role to play in entrenching the democratic process in the state, saying the members must ensure the credibility of the electoral process.
Other members of the commission are Dr. Bunmi Omosehindemi, Lateef Raji, Toyin Famakinwa and Olusegun Ayedun, with Olumide Lawal as the permanent secretary.
The LASIEC chairman, Philips, said the commission would justify the confidence reposed in it, adding that it would do all within its power to ensure credible, free and fair elections.
She added that her team would go back to the drawing board and critically appraise the situation on the ground, while an election date would thereafter be determined in due course.
