Director of Defence Information, Defence Headquarters, Brigadier-General Rade Abubakar, says the army is committed to to purging itself of corrupt officers.

Abubakar said the army was determined to reform and sanitise the force, saying it would welcome ideas from all quarters for a sustained professional excellence.

According to him, there is no corrupt armed force that is successful, saying it was important for officers to

remain neutral and purposeful to their duty adding that involving in politics was a distraction.

He observed that the military’s engagement in national activities was part of its primary duty in maintaining peace and security in the country.

According to him, the force has Standard Operation Procedures (SOP) which guides officers in their line of

duty and should not be contravened.

Abubakar said that any officer that violates the SOP stood a chance of facing the consequences of his action.

The army on June 10 confirmed the dismissal of some of its senior officers from service following the approval of the Army Council, after being investigated for partisanship during the 2015 general elections.

The retirements of the officers were in connection with an investigation by the Presidential Committee on defence contracts.

Abubakar, says the military will rehabilitate repentant Boko Haram members through its “Operations Safe Corridor’’, saying the operation was to rehabilitate, reintegrate, empower and de-radicalise surrendered members of the group.

However, he said the military was not in any way relaxing in finding out the sponsors of boko haram, saying the military in 2015 came up with security operation that targeted the insurgency.

He said following the operation, a lot of boko haram members surrendered when they knew they would not be killed if they did so, saying insurgency was something that was unpredictable, boundless and transitional.

The director said the military also came up with another operation called “Operation Pulo Shield’’ in the Niger Delta, saying the operation was aimed at ensuring total peace in the area.

He said the military was re-strategising to ensure that it curbed the menace in the Niger Delta without inflicting pains on innocent masses, calling on any aggrieved persons to channel their grievances though the right source and not through violence.

Abubakar, said everyone from the Niger Delta was in support of the activities of the militants, saying all citizens were expected to have civic responsibility, and no nation can move forward through persistent violence.

He assured Nigerians of the military’s determination to ensure security prevailed in every part of the country.
