The Federal Government has approved the design of a monorail project that will connect Ikeja Railway Station to the new Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal 1 in Lagos.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this in a post, following a review of the design alongside the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and engineering teams from both agencies.
The minister said the monorail would provide a link between the Ikeja Railway Station, where the Lagos Red Line terminates, and Terminal 1 of the international airport, which is currently being reconstructed.
Keyamo said the monorail would convey commuters and air passengers from Ikeja Railway Station, where the Lagos Red Line terminates, to the airport terminal currently undergoing reconstruction.
He listed five stations along the proposed route as Ikeja Station, Domestic Airport Station, Beesam Station, Toll Gate Station and MMIA Airport Station.
According to Keyamo, the project forms part of the ongoing reconstruction of the airport, which serves as one of Nigeria’s major aviation gateways.
He described the monorail as an integral part of the reconstruction of the airport, which serves as Nigeria’s major international aviation gateway.
The project is expected to improve access between the rail network and the airport, although the minister’s announcement did not specify a construction timeline, project cost or proposed completion date.
He added that the design appraisal and approval involved officials and engineering teams from the ministry and FAAN.
