Barely ten months to the expiration of his tenure as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Alhaji Musiliu Smith has resigned his appointment.

Smith, a one-time Inspector General of Police during the President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration was appointed as Inspector General of Police in May 1999 and retired in March 2002 following a police strike.

According to Police Service Commission Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani confirmed Smith’s resignation.

In his words, the Commission chairman’s resignation was on health grounds and President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted it.

He said Smith is expected to hand over to Retired Justice Clara Ogunbiyi, who is representing the judiciary at the commission.

Ani noted that the Commission was yet to issue an official statement on Smith’s resignation, saying an official statement on his resignation will be issued on Thursday.

Smith, whose tenure is scheduled to end on July 2023, served the Commission for over four years.

Sources said his resignation came amid the long disagreement between the Commission and the Nigeria Police Force on recruitment exercises.
