In an effort to reduce the incidents of fatalities associated with misappropriation of lethal weapons, police personnel may soon jettison the usage of fire arms during arrest duties, routine patrol and low risk operations.

In the alternative, the use of technologies and weapon systems such as electronic- muscular disruption technology commonly known as Taser or Stun Guns shall henceforth be introduced.

Acting Inspector General of Police Muhammed Adamu dropped the hint while addressing officers and men of the Lagos State Command at the Police College, Ikeja.

Adamu, who raised the alarm on the rising cases of misuse of firearms by policemen added that the police were considering the use of technology and weapon system as against the use of firearms.

His words, ” In the long time ,rather than the use of firearms, we shall henceforth use technologies and weapon systems such as electro- muscular distruption technology, which is commonly known as ‘Tasers or Stun guns ‘ by police for routine patrol, arrest duties and other low risk operations .”

The police boss also expressed his sadness and concern on the rising cases of abuse of firearms by policemen

” This visit has become expedient in view of the recent trend of unprofessional conducts by some personnel, who in their disregard to their professional training, international protocols ,constitutional dicates ,force policies and ethical standards have continued to drag the force into acts that pitch us against the citizens we were engaged, paid and statutorily obliged to save and protect.

From January to April 2019 , Lagos State has recorded four incidents of misuse of firearms ,which have resulted in extra judicial killings of young citizens ofthie country and injury to others “

More worrisome is that two of those incidents occurred within the last two weeks “the Police boss stated .

He continued that ” our visit to Lagos State today is therefore designed to make a number of clear statement .Firstly to condole with the families of the victims of recent incidents of misuse of firearms or other forms of abuse of power by identified police personnel in the state .”

” Second is to reassure citizens that as an institution, the Nigerian Police Force does not and will never condone any form of abuse of power ,acts resulting in misuse of firearms, overzealousness and sundry unprofessional conducts by any member of the police ,regardless of his or her rank and position “

The IGP ,while fielding questions from journalists on the rising cases of kidnappings and banditry said ‘ our tactics and operations are yielding positive results “

He insisted that the police are winning the war against kidnappings and banditry in different parts of the country.

According to him, the kidnappers and armed bandits are running away from the bush to the. city, where the police would clampdown on them .

“Kidnappers and bandit’s have no hiding place .They are no more on the forest. We have made the forest very hot for them .They are escaping to. the city ,where we will easily arrest them.

The situation is under control .The strategy and other operations in terms of Operation Puff Harder is working “, the police boss said.
